Can I use my Health Savings Account (HSA), Flexible Spending Arrangement (FSA) or Insurance Rewards
The short answer to whether you can charge massage sessions on your HSA/FSA card or Insurance Rewards Program is...maybe. Not such a short answer after all, but I'm sure you are not surprised. Here are a couple of things you can look into to see whether massage is covered for your plan.
First, each Health Savings Account (HSA), Flexible Spending Account (FSA) and Insurance Rewards plan is different but my merchant category code is set up as an eligible code according to most plans. My Merchant Category Code (MCC) is Medical Services And Health Practitioners 8099, which is the category that is most descriptive of my services: offering therapeutic massage for increased performance, faster recovery and stress/anxiety reduction.
The second piece is that while I don’t need to keep a copy in my records, a prescription, physician's referral or additional requirements may be necessary for you to keep on file or submit to your plan. You may also need to keep receipts and in some cases those receipts may be required to have specific information on them.
Lastly, there may be other considerations unique to your plan. Therefore, I recommend contacting your card or program issuer directly about the specific requirements for your plan and informing them of my Merchant Category Code (MCC), as every program is different and eligibility requirements vary.
If after you’ve spoken to your card or program representative, you still have questions, feel free to reach out to me and I’ll do my best to refer you to additional resources.
